Pool Party

Date: Saturday, July 17, 1999
Time: 10:00 AM
Place: Georgia Welcome Center
Members Present: Janice Alster, J.R. Alster, Larry Alster, Michelle Alster, Shawn Arrowood, Brian Bogardus, Donna Bogardus, Karen Breitinger, Kurt Breitinger, Jim Creer, Judy Creer, Wendy Creer, Carol Haff, John Haff, Ron Kaufman, Ernest Van Horn, Rudy Wilmoth, Anita Wylds & Brian Wynne.

Judy headed back to the house to make final preparations. John & Carol headed over to Andy Jones Mazda in their rental red Neon before remeeting with us at the Creer‘s house. They were off to pick up Carol’s 99 whose engine had to be replaced due to that mis-machined #4 bearing cap thing.

Wendy had mapped out a circuitous route through several local parks before ending up at her parent’s house for the cook-out and swim-in.

We made our way down the River Watch Parkway towards North Augusta for Stop #1. Actually stop is a misnomer, it was really a slow drive through. We drove in one end of Riverview Park, turned around in a parking area on the other end and then back out the way we came. On last years rally of the same name, Wendy took us to Pendleton King Park in Augusta where there is a disc golf course, father Jim lamented that no one had brought a disc to play with. Riverview Park holds another of the several disc golf courses in the CSRA and nobody brought a Frisbee this time either. Maybe next year.

We then buzzed the River Walk, causing as little commotion as ten Miatas in a line can cause.

We actually came to a stop for a leg stretch at the Savannah Rapid Pavilion. (can you tell we live near the Savannah River by all these place names?) About half the group walked down the hill to see the river and rapids and the other half stayed up top and talked. Guess what the topic of discussion was? Right. The sound of Janice’s new dual exhaust. The look of Brian and Ernest’s new mirrors. The smell of Larry’s rich turbocharged exhaust. Rudy’s new roll bar. Blah, blah, blah. On to the final stop, the home of Jim, Judy, a grill and a pool.

I think Wendy needs to bottle her talent of some how keeping a snake of Miatas together while transversing some of the busiest roads around. She could sell it on Miata.net and make millions. I’d buy some, every time I lead a rally, within 5 miles I’ve chopped off the tail at a light.

The food was great and the water cool. Just the elixir needed after a drive in the hot sun. Thanks to the Creers for making us feel at home in their home.

John and Carol did make it for the eats, but still in a red Neon. That is another story altogether.
